From August 2025 through July 2026, Progress Environmental, LLC performed a complex asbestos abatement and hazardous materials remediation project at the Benning Road Transfer Station in Washington, D.C. The 200,000-square-foot industrial facility, originally constructed in 1940, presented a unique and challenging work environment. The project included the removal of approximately 42,000 SF of Cementitious Insulation Board, 20,000 LF of Expansion Refractory Board, and 128 Fire Doors, with the majority of the work performed under full containment with negative pressure.
What made this project especially challenging was the location and limited accessibility of asbestos-containing materials within the facility’s incinerators and 100-foot chimney areas. Progress developed specialized access and work procedures, including scaffolding installed inside the incinerators, along with decking and structural bridging to safely reach difficult and confined areas.
In addition to asbestos abatement, our crews performed extensive cleanup of ash, PCB, and other miscellaneous oils contamination from concrete surfaces, pits, and mechanical systems throughout the facility. This intricate work required careful sequencing, specialized cleaning and decontamination procedures, engineered containments, HEPA filtration, ongoing quality-control inspections, and close coordination among our project management, safety, and field teams.
